Tips & Gadgets For People With Multiple Sclerosis Or Other Physical Disabilities

Sometimes life has a way of putting some seemingly insurmountable physical challenges in your path, especially if you are in a wheelchair. I like to think of myself as a problem solver, able to sometimes "outsmart" the problem by thinking outside of the box. A time when I had to use this "I can do this" mindset was an Easter dinner several years ago.

Lap Eating Trays

Easter was two days away and the whole family was coming for dinner. If I was going to get the ham thawed in time, I needed to get it out of the freezer and into the refrigerator. I decided I could get the ham on the counter and I would ask my daughter to put it in the refrigerator when she visited that evening. Good plan; the only thing is my daughter came and went and the ham never crossed my mind. Now I had a real dilemma. The ham could not sit out all night and I was not expecting other guests that evening. Every time I tried to lift the ham from my lap to the refrigerator shelf, it would drop. Now it was time for some creative problem solving. To overcome this obstacle, I created a transfer board out of a cookie sheet. I put one end of the board on my lap and one end on the shelf. All I needed to do was slide the ham up the cookie sheet to the shelf. Voila! Sometimes we just have to go about things in a different way to accomplish the task.

Lap Eating Trays

MS has provided me with enough challenges to last a lifetime but it has helped me realize how difficult and exhausting even everyday tasks can be. Unfortunately, sometimes these challenges are not evident to the people around us. The suggestions presented in this article are an attempt to help families understand how they can help a physically limited relative or friend. Or, these thoughts might give you insight into how to become more self-sufficient.

TIPS TO INCREASE SAFETY AND INDEPENDENCE IN THE KITCHEN

MS has forced some of us to deal with issues of limited strength and dexterity, poor vision or balance, or lapses in memory. Any and all of these problems can make it difficult and unsafe to accomplish tasks that are necessary in the kitchen. In most cases, the longer someone can be safely independent, the happier they will be.

How families can help:
Think ready to grab, heat and eat. If some Good Samaritan fixes a large quantity of something, have it stored in the freezer in individual serving containers. Then, it can be microwaved and eaten from the same container. Microwave diner plates with covers allow you to make a plate with multiple items and then freeze it. This would be a way for a family member to offer help. Just save a serving of each dish from a meal created for members of your household. Then, when ready to eat, it just has to be thawed and microwaved. Use non-breakable containers instead of glass. Opt for small containers that hold one serving and can go from freezer to microwave. Deep walled dishes also provide sides to help scoop food onto an eating utensil. Freeze bread, bagels and English muffins to keep them from getting stale. In this way, you can take out one serving at a time. Make sure the bagels and muffins are sliced before freezing. People with poor sensation in their finger tips find it difficult to use storage bags that require you to line-up two tracks and press them together. Closing bags with twist ties or plastic clips, likewise, can be frustrating. I have everything transferred to zipper type storage bags.
Modifications to make food preparation easier:
Induction Cooktop - Because of the physical problems encounter with MS, being around an open heat source poses the risk of burns. An Induction Cooktop uses magnetic waves to cause the coils in the bottom of a pot or pan to heat. The cooktop itself remains cool and accidentally touching the cookplate will not cause burns to the skin. My research leads me to believe a Pacemaker can be affected by these microwaves, so you need to use caution if the person coming in contact with it has this heart aid. Counter-top microwave - Many homes have a microwave over the stove which can be difficult to use and unsafe for a person with limited strength. A counter-top microwave allows the user to more easily transfer hot dishes to the counter. Smaller, individual serving bakeware make the weight more manageable. Since the bottom of the container gets hot, I keep a pie or cake pan handy and just slip dishes onto the pan. Make sure you keep items level in the transfer process Convection Oven - A hot, open oven door is an accident waiting to happen for someone with poor balance; or it can be a hazard when someone with limited strength tries to lift a hot baking dish out of the oven. A counter-top-convection oven, which is about the size of a regular toaster oven, allows food to be transferred much easier to the counter. Instead of heating food from the bottom, a convection oven uses a built-in fan to circulate hot air evenly through the cooking area. I find my convection oven does a very good job of baking without burning and operating it is not difficult to learn. Basic convection ovens, without all the bells and whistles, cost between 0 and 0. Electric Frying Pan - Electric frying pans allow you to cook away from the stove and even permit the cook to sit at a table. The problem with the regular size appliances is that they are heavy and large enough to cook for a group of people. The pan I am suggesting is only 7" X 7 " and lightweight enough that it is easy to carry to the sink for washing. An added desirable feature is that it is the perfect size to prepare a meal for one or two small eaters. Pull-out-shelves - Objects in the back of lower, cavernous, kitchen cabins can be difficult to reach and are often forgotten. Pull-out-shelves may be a problem solver to help make this area more accessible. These shelves can be found in large, local hardware stores, and someone with some carpentry skills can usually install them. Dycem Mat - A stroke or other health problem may leave a person with only one useful hand, without the additional hand to stabilize things. The Dycem Mat is a vinyl mat used to eliminate slipping and sliding problems on shelves, work surfaces, under plates or cups; or it can be used to provide an improved grip on handles, cutlery, arm rests, walkers, wheelchair seats, trays or footrests. PenFriend - Someone who is visually impaired may have difficulty distinguishing between foods, medications, ingredients or other products with small writing on their labels. The PenFriend works by placing a label on an item and an identifying message is recorded into the pen. When the tip of the pen is touched to the label, the message is spoken. There is another assistive product I really prize and that is motorized blinds. Before I had automated blinds, if I wanted privacy at night, I would have to leave blinds closed all the time. My home was always a very dark and gloomy place. Being so cut off from the world, I sometimes did not even know what the weather was like outside. I could stand to adjust the controls but, because furniture was sometimes in my way, this was a fruitless endeavor. With motorized blinds, I just point and click and I have sunlight. These were expensive, so I selectively placed them in areas that were unreachable. For windows that I can reach the controls, I use blinds that are operated with a cord rather than a wand. Because of the physical limitations created by MS, the motion of turning a wand can be difficult for many people. When you see a person sitting in the dark, before making a quick judgment, it might be prudent to consider... which came first, the darkness or the depression?

I have discussed tips to increase independence but do not want to leave out one very important safety tip - an emergency alert button. While achieving independence, it is crucial you can call for help in the event of a fall or in another emergency. Call buttons worn on the wrist can be inaccessible if the hand that will push the button is pinned under you or in some other way inoperable. A pendant is accessible to both hands. Pin the pendant to the front of pajamas at night to keep it readily available but prevent it from flopping around. Check with your local Cancer Society, hospice, or other similar organization for recommendations in your area.

By putting a few modifications in place, you can roll away barriers preventing independence. Maybe you cannot do things the way you used to but, by changing your approach to the task, it is still achievable. Start thinking, "I can do this. I just need to figure out how".

Should Your Cat Be an Indoor Cat Or an Outdoor One

When people decide on having a family they usually discuss issues such as where is the best place/environment for children to grow healthily, what risks there are in different circumstances etc. It is a shame that most people don't do the same thing before getting a pet. A pet is also for life - in fact some children leave home before the pet does!

Lap Eating Trays

One of the most important decisions to be made before acquiring a cat or kitten is to decide whether it will be an indoor cat or an outdoor cat. It is necessary to weigh up the pros and cons of each side of the coin so to speak.

Lap Eating Trays

Outdoor Cats
They can run and roam free, chase butterflies and climb trees, pounce on something blowing past and play with piles of leaves, find somewhere quiet of their choosing when they need to attend to nature, sleep in the sun or lie in the shade. And the list could go on.
They can also get run over by cars, get into fights with or catch infections from other cats, get chased/injured by dogs, kill native birds, insects, reptiles or even get stolen and sold for profit by the unscrupulous. Again, the list could continue.

Indoor Cats
Are safe from the above dangers, usually pampered, have a lot of toys to keep them amused, need entertaining, and can be mischievous. They need a litter box which needs emptying daily. They are totally dependent on their owner for food and shelter, are unable to exercise as much so tend to put on weight (just like humans).

Studies have shown that indoor cats live longer. We can't know if they are happier, no matter what the research says. They could perhaps be very content, as can outdoor cats.
If your cat is to be purely an indoor cat, you need to provide fresh air and entertainment, especially if you are not home much during the day. A window with a view of a street or bird bath nearby or a tree with bird food will give your cat something to watch. If a window is able to be left partially open, your cat will also be able to enjoy fresh air and enticing smells. Cat toys, a climbing frame/scratching post, fresh water and an easily accessible litter tray are also necessities. Remember, your indoor cat is dependent on you for everything!

If you want to allow your cat outdoors but want to preserve the wildlife or dangers to your cat there are a couple of alternatives available. You could build an enclosed area that your cat is able to access from the house. This area would need something for your cat to climb and jump to and from, a shady areas as well as a place in the sun, sand for digging and for calls of nature, toys, water and some lawn or something green for eating as well as a different texture to walk on. Costing of this outdoor area is essential before making this your choice. A new innovation that I have only just heard about is having a free rolling top rail on your fence to stop your cat being able to jump over it. The rolling rail won't allow the cat to land and take off again. Of course the fence needs to be high enough so the cat can't just jump it and be aware that nearby trees can be climbed so the cat can get over the fence by bypassing the rolling rail. I have no idea of the cost of this rolling rail but it sounds an exciting alternative.

Whichever you choose, indoor or outdoor, a good relationship with your cat is essential. Allow time for playing and cuddles on your lap. Just like you would do with your children.

Stackable Bookshelves

Notes From the Couch - A Shift in Perspective

My husband has a favorite chair. It is a leather recliner in a ghastly shade of mustard with a round wooden tray attached to the left armrest. It reminds me of a geriatric chair-the type one would expect to find inside a nursing home or next to a hospital bed. My husband enjoys relaxing on his favorite chair after a long day at work, watching the evening news with a cocktail in hand while our cat Buck snoozes peacefully on his lap. For reasons that are very legitimate this chair holds extreme sentimental value to my husband. It is one of his only tangible memories of his beloved younger brother who passed away in 1998.

Lap Eating Trays

I first expressed my discontent with the aesthetic aspect of this chair several years ago, well before we were married. I suggested that the chair be moved to a spare bedroom or home office, where it would remain accessible albeit less obtrusively. "It does not compliment the rest of the furnishings," I argued. "The color reminds me of Gulden's spicy brown mustard." My then boyfriend argued his case, claiming that aside from its emotional significance, the chair is incredibly comfortable and a favored spot for relaxing and watching television. Recognizing my defeat, the chair remained in its trusted spot in the center of the living room directly across from the flat screen television.

Lap Eating Trays

With our move to a new home fast approaching I decided to brave the chair topic yet again. With fantasies of a fresh new living room furnished in tasteful colors and attractive contemporary furniture, I suggested that the chair take up residence in the spare bedroom that my husband intends to use as a home office. "It is perfect for an office," I pleaded, admittedly somewhat manipulatively. "Imagine how nice it will be to have the chair in your own space, where you can relax and unwind in private." I silently prayed the scales of justice would tip in my favor after four years of my silent struggle as the chair remained a permanent eyesore in the center of our very small living room.

My husband was able to see beyond my charade. "Our new living room is very large," he replied. "We need the chair to fill the space until we can manage to purchase new furniture." "It is the practical solution", he continued, the wheels of his logical male brain swiftly turning as he engaged in logistical problem solving. I found myself wondering if apes argue about such trivial details or is the pettiness reserved only for us humans. Exasperated, I continued to plead my case. "I have tolerated the chair for years. When do I get to have a say in the matter?" My husband fell silent-not a good sign- then replied in a resigned manner, "Whatever you say dear. You have total control of the decorating". His concession only frustrated me further, as I found myself feeling guilty and I hate feeling guilty. I recalled the wise words of an old friend- in close relationships, it is impossible to win at your partner's expense.

Later that same day I stood in my mother-in-law's kitchen, recounting the conversation in a desperate search for wisdom and guidance. I swore to myself I would never disrespect the martial boundaries by sharing such details with my mother-in-law, yet here I stood, justifying my decision with the rationale that nobody is better equipped to assist me with understanding my husband's behavior than the woman from whose loins he sprung. She listened, and with a lighthearted smile, reminded me that this is the business of marriage. "He was very close with his brother," she stated, then glanced in the direction of an old weathered purple leather recliner chair- the one anomaly in a room filled with soft pastels, earth tones and plenty of crisp, clean white. I have been with my husband long enough to know that the purple leather recliner was his father's favorite chair.

My husband's father passed away in 2003 after putting up a heroic fight against the cancer that eventually overtook him. I vividly remember him at the end of his life, a patriarch in the center of the room surrounded by his children and grandchildren as he relaxed in his purple leather recliner, absorbing the energy and love that flowed around him. I studied my mother in law's face as she glanced in the direction of her departed husband's favorite chair, and something deep inside of me shifted dramatically.

Now, when I see the Gulden's spicy brown recliner chair, instead of feeling resentment I see my husband's face, his brown eyes and his gentle hands stroking our apricot colored cat. I see him on a Saturday afternoon eating peanuts and drinking sweet tea as he screams at the television, engrossed in college football. I see him on a cold winter night, cozy in his beige slippers and flannel pajama bottoms, the orange glow of a roaring fire reflected in his eyes. Then I picture an empty chair, and in my mind's eye I visualize my husband gone from the world, and my life, forever. Now the chair does not seem like such an intrusion anymore. Instead, it symbolizes home, family and comfort. I feel a warm glow inside my heart, and I see the chair in a whole new light. Perhaps this is what marriage is all about. Now, if only I could convince him to put the cap back on the toothpaste tube and stop leaving his boxer shorts on the bathroom floor.

The Indonesian Maids

I fly quite allot! Well at least once a month and more than enough! On this particular occasion I was heading to Singapore after two months in Doha, Qatar and the flight surprisingly turned out to be extremely entertaining indeed. The show of which I became an active participant helped to pass the time and I arrived in Singapore on the quickest flight that I had ever known - the journey just flew past!

Lap Eating Trays

First a spiel about the plane!

Lap Eating Trays

As the new and much acclaimed Airbus and Boeing aircraft roll off the shelves to be snapped up by International airlines, soon to be passengers have been given images of 'comfort and style' as they cross the skies. This has sadly not occurred (as all the adverts showed people drinking champagne in business class) and aircraft travel remains an uncomfortable experience for economy class passengers who are treated like cows at an earlier than expected morning milking session. The design and emphasis of the new planes seems to have revolved around the "how to fit 10 elephants in a mini" and fuel efficiency and maximising profits having taken over completely. I have heard rumours on the grapevine that McDonalds place great emphasis on the design of their restaurant seating than do aircraft manufacturers; maybe Airbus and Boeing should take a leaf out of their book or MacDonald's should set up its own airline.

As I stepped onboard one of the new planes in Doha airport I already knew what to expect and was thus prepared mentally and physically (as far as one can be in these circumstances) for the seven hour journey from Doha, Qatar to Changi Airport in Singapore. I was ready to have my spine pushed inwards to my stomach and for my neck to be squashed and massaged by some weird obtrusion in the chair that precludes the resting of the head comfortably. I was ready to sit in one position for the whole journey as being 5 foot eleven inches I find my legs jammed once the seat in front shifts gear to the "comfortable" position. Not that I am tall but I have come to the conclusion that these new planes have been designed either for serpents or very small people!

Enough complaining and to The Experience!

I did not expect the unexpected on this flight. I had prepared myself by locking my emotions and thoughts into an iron safe with multiple locks for six hours, I had drawn the steel shutters down so that nothing would invade my privacy space - not one mishap, irritating passenger, uncomfortable seat or long queue at the toilet would upset me in the slightest.

I had though erred before even boarding the flight. At check-in I had missed out the crucial request for a window or aisle seat and as I looked at my very central and rather squashed 24F a little bit of emotion escaped the prison cell it had been banished to.

Yikes!

I sat down heavily in a right black mood; cursing the fact that even this new plane did not offer individual movies and I kept my eye on the empty seats around - with the view to performing athletic contortions by jumping out of my seat, swinging from the luggage bins to plop rapidly into one should it not be filled upon departure!

All pens though slowly but surely became occupied with little people!

Why do I mention 'little' people? Well, simply put and with no disrespect intended for they were little, in fact the average height of all could not have been more than five foot and in my books that is small. As I kept my beady eye on the empty seats the other passengers were filling them up and nearly 90% of the planes passenger list consisted of Indonesian girls.

I assumed for the most part that they had all been working for a year or two as maids in Doha, Qatar or in surrounding areas for wealthy Arab families. This is something that occurs all over Asia with hundreds of thousands of maids leaving home countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc to work in wealthier countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore and further afield in places like Dubai and Doha in Qatar. It would seem that the ones filling up the seats that I so dearly wanted had completed their tours of duty and were returning home to their families and a new life therein or for a holiday back home before returning to servitude next year!

One very small girl sat delicately in her seemingly oversized chair next to me and promptly snored herself to sleep. That was a positive sign, should I feel the need to attend the toilet I could suck myself from my prison without bashing the seat in front with my knees or head or both and I would be able to get past her without too much bother. On the seat to my right another little girl with a cheeky smile plonked herself into position and with the same smile proceeded to wiggle around like an Airbus representative might to prove to all that the seats were perfect and very comfortable indeed despite passengers complaints. And behind, in front and as far as the eye could see were maids and more maids and I was the odd-one-out!

I was still angry! Angry at myself for not having obtained a window seat! Angry at Airbus for producing such ridiculously small seats and angry at the maids for having chosen that day to fly. Just angry at everything really! I also wandered if they could fit two maids to one seat but felt that nobody else except I would go for the idea!

As the plane took off, I went through as series of motions to read my book, read a magazine and to sleep. But nothing worked and so I suffered onwards and through the meal that took amazing contortions to digest as each swallow caused a stab of pain to flow down from my curved neck to my stomach where the spine was waging war. As I was wriggling desperately to cut a piece of chicken without knocking the face of the maid sitting next to me, life changed and I forgot all about the seats and airbus and my anger vanished.

Don't tell my wife this please!

As I fought my chicken the girl on my left took my dessert off my tray and proceeded to eat it! I looked on in complete shock at what I felt was grand-larceny or theft or something to that order but she just sat there eating my dessert without a care in the world. I didn't feel like my chicken anymore and just sat there, wandering if I should say something when all of a sudden a bowl of Emirates fruit came and plonked itself on my tray! And then a dessert!! I was a very confused passenger but in-light of a complete lack of understanding I proceeded to eat the fruit and the dessert, I just didn't know what else to do. I certainly did not want to open up a line of dialogue

After the meal had been cleared away I tried to get some sleep but the head of the girl on my right slipped dramatically and ended up on my shoulder. It wasn't heavy so I let it go in favour of causing a fuss by waking her up. And it was okay because before long the girl to my left balanced everything out by falling asleep on my spare appendage. I sat their immovable apart from being able to wriggle my big toes and wandered if the sky was about to fall-in.

Some of the girls in the seats behind, to the distant sides or in front must have noticed this blatant abuse of my body parts but instead of waking the girls up and moving them away so that I could have three seats to myself they found it quite hysterical. Like Chinese whispers, yet spoken quite loudly (and in Bahasa but the jist of the whisperings appeared quite unmistakable) the word spread around the plane faster than the speed of sound - if that's possible. As I sat there in my cage, a seeming horde of 'viewers to the show' clambered onto seats laughing and jostling as they "rabbitted" away and pointing at me with cameras a flashin'. I was only saved when the pilot complained of instability due to mass internal movement. He put the seat belt sign on and the stewardesses buzzed around in controlled panic as they moved the masses back to their seats.

My two girls though passed through this activity in oblivion, either my shoulders were superbly comfortable or they were very tired I knew not.

After two hours I had one girl fast asleep in my lap whilst the other was resting on my arm. Had I let go her head would have fallen smack onto the other girls and well I could not let that happen so continued in my airbus support role!

After two hours they both woke up. I initially thought that they would be embarrassed upon finding out what had just passed. But they woke up, shook their heads then smiled as if to say 'nice shoulders' and proceeded to wake the rest of the plane up with their chatter and noise. They poked the girls in the seats in front, threw 'things' behind and so at three o'clock in the morning (Doha Time) the lights came on, the shutters went up and for all and intents and purposes we could have been landing shortly except for the fact that Singapore was still two thousand miles away and we were smack bang above the middle of the Indian Ocean.

Hair brushes were passed from one end of the plane to the other; I would not have been surprised to learn that the pilot had a turn at smoothing his locks, before returning the hairbrush miraculously to its owner. Crumbs fell like snow over my body as biscuits and nibbles were passed around and the noise was incredible. No stewardess showed up, I think they were in hiding.

I was still part of the show!

As hair brushes, mirrors and lipsticks passed me by, as biscuits traversed the plane and the chatter rose to deafening levels they all took turns at asking me questions. The first one of "are you married" was followed in quick succession by "how old are you" and despite the fact that I informed them of my lovely wife back home and that I was getting on in years they seemed un-phased! In fact they all took turns at being photographed with me as the centrepiece, all took turns at offering me anything from coca cola to phone numbers and all delighted in teasing each other!

We landed in Singapore a very noisy and merry bunch indeed. I scraped myself out of by bucket seat, wiggled my shoulder gently to see if they moved after-all and thanked my hostesses sincerely for making the flight such a pleasure. This last took quite awhile as there were at least thirty or more who wished to shake my hand, kiss my cheek or at the very least just say goodbye.

Once safely inside the terminal building I marched off to get my bags as they transferred to the Jakarta flight. I did not keep any of the phone numbers, email or postal addresses given to me, I did not keep any of the photographs given to me from their pasts and I certainly scrubbed my face of any offending lipstick residues - I took home only the memory of an excellent flight and a silent thank you I give to all for turning what could have been a tortuous flight into a pleasurable journey!

The seats are still terrible though!

Consumer Reports: Car Seats

A child car seat should be high on your to-buy list. You'll need one to bring your baby home from the hospital and for every car trip thereafter. In fact, hospitals and birthing centers generally won't let you leave by car with your newborn if you don't have one. Every state requires that kids up to 4 years of age ride in a car seat; many require booster seats for older children.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

Lap Eating Trays

The major brands of car seats you're likely to encounter are, in alphabetical order: Baby Trend, Britax, Chicco, Combi, Cosco, Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco, Peg Perego, and Safety 1st.

There are also car beds for preemies and other very small newborns if there's a concern that a car seat may not provide a secure fit or that it may exacerbate breathing problems. In addition, there are specially designed car seats for children with physical disabilities. Every model of car seat sold in the U.S. must meet federal safety standards. These are your basic choices:

Infant seats. These rear-facing seats are for babies up to 22 pounds. They allow infants to recline at an angle that doesn't interfere with breathing and protects them best in a crash. Many strollers are now designed to accommodate infant car seats. All infant car-seat models come with a handle, and nearly all have a base that secures to your vehicle with LATCH connections or a vehicle safety belt, a convenience that lets you remove the seat and use it as a carrier. You can strap most infant seats into a car without a base, using the vehicle safety belts, but most people don't use them that way.

Infant seats have either a three-point harness--two adjustable shoulder straps and a lock between the child's legs or--even better--an adjustable five-point system--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap. The handle usually swings from a position behind the seat's shell when in the car to an upright position for carrying. Remember to swing the handle to the vehicle position before each trip. Slots underneath most seats help them attach to the frame of a shopping cart.

With an infant car seat, you also can move your baby from car to house or vice versa without waking him or her up--a plus for both of you. Note also that extra bases are available so you can keep a secured base in each of your vehicles. Your baby may outgrow an infant car seat quickly and become too heavy for you to use it as a carrier. As a result, you may find yourself having to buy a convertible car seat after your baby is 6 to 9 months old. However, our advice is still to start with an infant seat before moving up to a convertible seat.

Travel systems. Travel systems offer one-stop shopping: You get an infant car seat and a stroller all in one. Most car-seat manufacturers offer these combination strollers/infant car seats. And many stand-alone strollers are now designed to accommodate infant car seats. With these strollers, you create a carriage by snapping an infant car seat into a stroller. The car seats of travel systems also come with a base, which stays in the car. The snap-on car seat is generally positioned atop the strollers so the infant rides facing the person pushing. Your baby can also ride in the stroller seat alone when he or she is big enough.

Most travel-system strollers can be used only with a car seat from the same company. They can also be bulky, so if you're a city dweller who negotiates more subway stairs than highways or if the trunk of your car isn't too roomy, you may be better off with a separate car seat and a compact stroller that is appropriate for a newborn.

Price range: (stroller frame only) to 0.

Convertible seats. With a convertible seat, the child faces rearward as an infant, then toward the front of the vehicle as a toddler. The seat can function as a rear-facing seat for infants up to 30 or 35 pounds, depending on the model, and as a front-facing seat for toddlers generally up to 40 pounds (a few have a 65-pound limit). Models typically have an adjustable five-point harness system--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap between the legs. Some models have a tray shield that lowers over the baby's head and fastens with a buckle between the legs. However, our tests show that children, especially small ones, are better restrained with a five-point harness.

A convertible car seat can be a money saver, taking your child from infancy to kindergarten and beyond. We advise starting with an infant seat first, though, as mentioned earlier. Keep in mind that convertible seats are not compatible with strollers, so you will have to transfer your baby from the convertible car seat to a carriage or stroller when you're ready to set out on foot. Such jostling can wake a sleeping baby, a problem if you need to take your child on frequent shopping expeditions or other errands.

Price range: to 0.

Toddler/booster seats. Looking like large versions of convertible seats, these front-facing seats are used with an internal harness for toddlers 20 to 40 pounds. They're either LATCH-attached or can be secured using the vehicle belts and tethers. When kids reach 40 pounds, the seat becomes a belt-positioned booster seat, which children can use until they're 80 or 100 pounds. With a belt-positioned booster seat, the child is restrained using the vehicle's lap and shoulder belt system.

Booster seats. These are generally for children weighing 40 to 80 pounds. (A very tall child may begin using a booster seat at 30 pounds.) Booster seats use the vehicle's own safety belts to restrain the child.

Built-in seats. Some U.S. and foreign automakers offer on select cars and minivans an integrated, forward-facing child seat that has a harness and accommodates toddlers weighing more than 20 pounds. There are also some booster-seat versions. Built-in seats must meet the same performance standards as add-on child seats. However, they offer little or no side protection and they're usually located next to a door, instead of in the center--the safer position. You may also need a regular car seat for when your child travels in other vehicles.

IMPORTANT FEATURES

Since Sept.1, 2002, all child car seats with an internal harness and nearly all passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. have been required to include equipment designed for simpler buckling. This system, called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), consists of child car-seat connections that attach to anchor points in the vehicle, eliminating the need to use a vehicle's safety belts to install the seat. You can still use safety belts to install a LATCH-equipped child car seat--for example, in an older car that lacks LATCH anchors. You can also retrofit some non-LATCH car seats with LATCH features.

Today's car seats cater to every possible taste--plain colors, plaids, animal and paw-print motifs, and patriotic red, white, and blue. Remember that, style aside, babies tend to be messy, so washable fabric is a plus, especially if your car seat will be with you beyond the first year, when training cups and eating on the go can kick into high gear. Car seats from some leading brands, however, require hand washing and line drying. Make sure you're up for that; most coverings are rigged through the harness-strap system and are held in place with elastic so they can be removed for laundering. But in some cases extracting the fabric from the seat can require extensive dismantling. Check the seat's manual for how-to's.

Extras such as add-on seat covers ("boots"), thicker padding, additional reclining options, or adjustable head-support cushions may offer greater comfort. But buy them only if they are sold by the same maker as the seat and for that specific seat, since they were tested that way; mixing brands is very risky. Some models have elastic side pockets for toys, bottles, or snacks. As your baby grows, they can come in handy, but they're not absolutely necessary.

Some infant and convertible seats have a level indicator on the side to help you install them facing the rear at a safe angle. A top tether is a webbed strap that can be used with all front-facing seats for children up to 40 pounds and with some up to 65 pounds. It's located on the back of a convertible or toddler seat and hooks into an eye bolt in a vehicle's rear deck, floor, roof, or seatback. Passenger vehicles manufactured on or after Sept.1,1999 have the anchors in place in their rear seats, but older models may need to have the hardware added. Obviously, you can't use a tether with cars that lack a top-tether anchor or that have no provision for a retrofit.

HOW TO CHOOSE

Start with an infant seat for a newborn and pay close attention to the height and weight limits as your child grows. When your baby reaches the infant seat's limits for height and weight, or becomes too heavy for you to tote, use a convertible seat in the rear-facing orientation up to the seat's limits in that mode. Then use the convertible seat front-facing until your toddler reaches the next height and weight limits. After that, use a booster seat until your child is tall enough to use the car's safety belts, typically at least 57 inches. Buying three seats instead of two may cost more, but it can pay off in protection and peace of mind

Make sure the seat is compatible with your car. One of the first things you should do in choosing a seat for your child is to check the fit of any models you're considering in your own car. Even before that, though, we suggest placing similar-looking models side by side in the store to compare features. (If you've already had your baby, place your child in the seat, to get a sense of the ease of buckling and unbuckling.) Then, if possible, bring the floor model to your car for a mock installation. Be aware that some vehicle seats are too short, indented, or excessively sloped to allow a good fit of a child car seats.

If you're considering a convertible car seat, try the floor model in both the rear- and front-facing positions. Check out the harness release button in the rear-facing position; in some models it may be too low to reach comfortably. If you're thinking about an infant car-seat/stroller combination, also known as a travel system, check to be sure that it fits in your trunk or vehicle cargo area. If the store won't let you take the seat out to your car to try it, make sure you can return any car seat you buy--or go to another store.

Insist on new. Although there are many baby items you can borrow or buy secondhand, don't make a car seat one of them if you can avoid it. A used seat may have been in a crash or recalled. The manufacturer's instructions may be missing. If, for some reason, you must use a secondhand seat, avoid those with an unknown history or that are older than six years. In the world of car seats, a six-year-old model is a relic--and risky. You'll also want to avoid recalled models.

Send in the registration card. You should be notified by the manufacturer if the car seat is recalled. To play it extra safe, you can also sign up for the Consumer Product Safety Commission's e-mail subscription list at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.asp. Updated recall information will be sent directly to your e-mail in-box. Or check monthly issues of Consumer Reports or visit http://www.ConsumerReports.org. Other sources of information on car-seat recalls include NHTSA's Web site (www.nhtsa.gov) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission site, http://www.recalls.gov.

Check the store's return policy. If you're not happy with a particular car seat for whatever reason, it's important to know that you can return it and try again with another model. Be aware that a badly soiled or damaged seat may not be exchanged.
